Introduction

In this collection of easy essays I explore the ways we see ourselves being crushed by a machine that has turned us into machines as well, depriving us of our humanity. I reflect on what has caused me to behave in this way and the experiences that have led me to resist it by saying NO and connecting more with my fellow human beings.

As students, academic success is very important and we need to work hard to achieve it. However, that does not mean that we lose connection from the wider world and be stuck in this race to the bottom.

We need to evaluate the true cost of this race and ask the question: Is it worth it? Only when we acknowledge the problem can we go towards solving it.

Looking back at those who made a difference inspires us to do the same. There are parallels with the gilded age in our current time and if we cultivate the right mindset and environment we might see a period where we regain some of our humanity back, our rights, living wage and an escape from being just another cog in this financial machine.
