The Edge of Eternity

By Niall Twohig

“It has been found again! What? Eternity. It is the sea mingled with the sun. My immortal soul, keep your vow despite the lonely night and the day on fire.”

– Arthur Rimbaud

These three pieces were written feverishly

in the early months of my wife, Lianne’s, cancer diagnosis,

seven months into the pandemic,

1.5 years into our daughter, Aislynn’s, life,

1 year into the shadow land opened by Da’s passing.

I’d say they are for Lianne, but in hindsight, I see them as:

an expression of our shared Being (Lianne-Aislynn-Niall)

as It rubbed against the edges of Mortality and Eternity,

as It moved through a desert with no guaranteed Promised Land.
