Eye Behind Eye / I Behind I

By Niall Twohig

Something in the human eye

Sees better than a camera sees:

Foreground and background

are more enmeshed

than the photo shows.

There’s no truer true to life

image

than the one seen

but never captured.

Viewing the photo above,

The viewer will never see

your crown of stars

will never see

angels of light

playing in your hair

(Reader, see them)

The camera’s

Image pulls You apart,

separates You into

foreground and

background

subject and

object

you and

not-you.

The eye

knows better

than image—

But some redemption

exists in image:

See the rainbows,

cradling you,

an imperfect

image of subtle lightflows

flows

between us,

flows

felt by eye behind eye

flows

felt by I behind I.
