Unnecessary Labor
By Niall Twohig
Last week we sat on a bed of pine needles.
The landscaper was kind enough to let us sit before he did his work.
Later, I return to the spot to see his work done –
And we no longer have our comfy bed of needles.
This makes me think:
His 1.5 hour’s work could have been postponed.
This would have given him 1.5 hour to read, to relax, to do whatever he willed.
And we would have had our comfy bed for the quarter.
I could have made him a promise, of course:
At the quarter’s end, we’ll divide your 1.5 hour work,
We’ll pack away our bed,
grateful to you
for the work you didn’t do.
