Environment as Teacher

Sitting on the beach:

I think about where these grains of sand came from, how old they are, and how far they have traveled. I think about where they originated; were they part of rocks? Did these grains of sand come from other continents? Did they need to travel through oceans to get here? How many generations have walked on these surfaces to make the sand what it is? Were these people happy families building sandcastles, or were they people visiting the beach to experience nature during moments that challenged them?

I think about the high and low tides, and how the sand continuously washes back and forth, into and out of the ocean.

I think about the many years that the sand will survive, and where the sand will end up in the future; it will be here longer than all of us. Future generations will probably sit on the beach and wonder about us. What will be surrounding them when they do, and what will they think about what our generation left behind?
