The Power of the People

By Noor Khalil

Social media has become a powerful tool for amplifying voices that have long been silenced. This easy essay delves into my personal experience as a Palestinian seeing our struggles recognized and shared on global platforms. During class this week, we discussed social media and the effects it has on mental health and societal expectations of us. As the class began sharing about how social media makes them try to be perfect in a world that isn't, at first I agreed. I talked about consumerism and how social media makes us constantly chase the next bag to “achieve happiness”. But then I stepped back into reality. I remember the times we were living in and realized, my feed is not what it once was. What once used to be high heels and red lipstick, has turned into a red puddle of blood flooding the streets of Gaza.

The power of social media is very strong.

For the first time in my life as a Palestinian,

people are screaming that our lives are worthy of living too.
