Partial Eclipse

By Niall Twohig

The total eclipse as photographed, from Lake Ontario, by my friend Jeff Cone

Sun Moon Earth

I’ve felt this convergence coming

in my bones,

in the Stonehenge of my Being.

This cosmic interplay

between heavenly bodies

pulls at my body

pulls at all our celestial bodies.

Oh, how I long to be in the umbra

but it always eludes me—

that totality, like a wafer on the tongue,

like full communion.

I am always off,

always askew,

always geographically

out of place

always temporally

out of time.

I live in penumbras:

a jagged being.

a partial eclipse.

Unwhole

and unholy.
